The 25 Names on the Immanuel Wreath

Invite Christ into your Christmas celebrations this year. Bestselling authors and popular teachers Emily Belle Freeman and David Butler worked together this year to create a unique new way to study the names of Christ throughout the holiday season. A tradition that Emily has been doing in her own home for a while now, this Immanuel Wreath details 25 names of Christ and includes a place to hold candles by each name, the perfect way for your family to study one name of Christ each day leading up to Christmas.

“For Christmas this year, in Come Follow Me, we will be studying The Living Christ,” said Emily in a recent video talking about the new wreath. “And one of our favorite parts of The Living Christ is how many different names for Jesus are listed within that document. And we just love thinking about all of those names of Christ.”

“We thought, wouldn’t it be awesome if we studied every one of the names for 25 days leading up to Christmas? And maybe a scripture every night to teach you just a little bit more about Jesus Christ and what we learn from his names.”

“One of the things it made us think about,” David added, “was when President Nelson invited us all to get to know the character and the heart of the Father and the Son better by studying the names in the topical guide.”

Emily goes on to explain how she does this tradition in her home with her family.

“We’ve been actually doing this for years,” Emily said. “And my grandkids love being at our house when the sun goes down during Christmas because they want to be the one who gets to light the candle. So we will start with a name on the first night, and we’ll read a scripture and then light that one candle. And then the next night we’ll study the next word, and we’ll read a scripture and then we’ll light two candles. So by the time we get to Christmas, all the candles will be lit and it is so pretty.”

“And if that makes you nervous,” Emily added, “to have 25 lit candles in your house, another way you could do it is take one candle and move it every night to the name that you are studying. We turn down all the lights, turn on the Christmas tree lights, and then we read that scripture together as a family and light that candle and oh, it’s one of the sweetest parts of Christmas.”

Then David continued, explaining the purpose and the meaning behind the name Immanuel Wreath.

“It gives that opportunity for a really short but really significant devotional all through the Christmas season about what He is like and what you could be looking for, and what you could anticipate. We called the name of the wreath the Immanuel wreath. That comes from the first book of Matthew, where the angel says to Mary and Joseph, His name will be Immanuel. That’s a Hebrew name that means God with us. And we love the idea that at Christmas time, God came into this world. And He came into our stories. And we love that the thought of each night talking about, how is God among us as a gift, and how is God among us as a healer, and how is he among us as a teacher, and just filling that whole Christmas season with watching for Him, anticipating Him showing up in your story.”

The 25 Names of Christ (And Related Scripture)

There are many ways to use the Immanuel Wreath in your own family. You might choose to focus on one name every day in December. You might read a name and the verse associated with that name, the light the candle next to the name on the wreath. You could like one candle for each name, or light one candle and move it to the name you are studying for that day. You might expand your conversation and discuss how you have seen the hand of Christ in your life recently.
